First excavation season at Letaba

The first excavation season at Letaba was a huge success. The team excavated two large refuse middens and recovered artefacts such as pottery and shell beads. Butchered animal bones abound at the site. One of the most exciting finds of the season, was the discovery of Persian glazed pottery pieces. The vessels reached the Letaba sites via Indian Ocean trade networks. Very few of these glazed wares have been found at sites in South Africa.
