Mapping past settlement in the Letaba region

One of our project aims is to conduct a systematic survey around the key archaeological site of Letaba. Survey data will be used to determine regional settlement patterns and population size, which will help to understand the nature of societal development at Letaba.

During July and August, a small team spent two weeks surveying about 2.3 square kilometres around the Letaba site. The team found more evidence of mainly Iron Age settlement in the area and will continue with the survey in 2026. By mapping and documenting the location of archeological sites in Kruger National Park, we support SANParks’ efforts to preserve cultural heritage.
